It seems like an age since we were toasting the advent of 2020 and what many of us hoped would be a bright, shiny new year marked by peace, prosperity and a comforting degree of certainty.
Fast forward to today and, I think it fair to say that most of us are feeling somewhat shell shocked by a year that has, so far, dished up exactly the opposite!
So, where should we look for some stability in what appears to be a wobbly old world?
Before I attempt to answer my own question, let’s briefly remind ourselves of the craziness of 2020-:
Made in China
The first case of what was later to become known as COVID-19 can be traced back to China’s Hubei Province in the second half of November 2019.
Two months later, on 23 January 2020, China announced a series of strict lockdown measures in the city of Wuhan.
The pandemic hits
On the 10th March the World Health Organisation recognised COVID-19 as a global pandemic.
Between two and three weeks later, South Africa and the United Kingdom both announced strict lockdown measures; a practice that became commonplace around the world.
Draconian measures
In South Africa’s case the lockdown included unprecedented and, some might say, draconian measures, such as a total ban on the sale of alcohol and cigarettes.
Around the globe, the previously rare sight of people wearing face masks in public became the new normal. Sales of hand sanitiser skyrocketed as access to most public premises was barred without the prior ceremonial cleaning of the hands.
Keep your distance
Almost overnight, forms of social greeting that have been embodied in human culture for as long as we can remember, like kissing, hugging and even shaking of hands, became taboo.
‘Keeping apart’ replaced ‘coming together’, as the new mantra.
Economic meltdown
The world over, as many small and medium sized businesses ground to a halt for many months, economies sunk into varying states of serious distress, including some that had previously been riding high.
The effect on the world’s middle classes was and is devastating. Those with insufficient resources to cushion the effect of a prolonged period with a diminished income, or none at all, have been dealt a hammer blow.
Fat cat heaven in hell
As usual, the poor have suffered the most, as meagre income opportunities and charitable funding sources have all but dried up. For the 10% of the world’s population that find themselves in extreme poverty the battle for survival has become less like pushing a rock uphill and more like pushing it up a cliff face.
Perversely, though, while the vast majority of the population have experienced differing degrees of distress, the ultra rich have been dining out!
At the end of May this year, Forbes announced that the richest 25 billionaires had added a mammoth $255billion to their collective wealth, in the two months after the world began locking down.
Winners take us all
They’re not the only ones trying to hide wry smiles as the rest of us struggle.
Big pharmaceutical companies must be licking their mask covered lips at the prospect of supplying a gazillion units of hastily manufactured vaccine, in response to the pandemic.
Communications technology companies are also big winners.
The genuine carers for our planet, distracted by the COVID threat, have been unable to stem a tsunami of infrastructure rollouts and satellite launches that aim to provide blanket coverage for technologies like 5G.
Such technologies are set to unleash a hitherto unknown and largely untested form of electromagnetic radiation that many reports suggest may trigger the start of a new mental health pandemic.
Its clear that from this pandemic there are emerging a few big winners and a great many losers …
A deliberately planned event, perhaps? I’m not going to explore that possibility further here but I suggest it is worth thinking about.
A big wake up call
Nonetheless, I do think it is beyond question that if 2020 has achieved anything positive, it has been to deliver a big wake up call to ordinary people like you and me.
It seems we have been provided with a clear signal that the time has come to redefine what we are used to calling \’normal life\’ or ‘business as usual’.
The good news
So, if you’re still reading, after this sobering reminder of what we\’ve collectively been through, you may be wondering what the good news is?
Well, working on the premise that you are either a life coach or that you have an interest in life coaching or leading a better life in general, the good news is that there is an antidote for a world that appears increasingly unpredictable and unstable.
It\’s called life coaching 🙂
Look out, the answer’s within!
The reason is because life coaching helps us search for answers in a rather unconventional place …
… within!
The evolution of feelings
The world can seem challenging, uncertain and even frightening to those of us who remain stuck in a mode of external dependency on ‘business as usual’.
On the other hand, for those self aware individuals with a clear understanding of purpose, a mind that is open to discovering the truth and a willingness to explore new ways of looking at life and new ways of doing things, life takes on a new dimension.
Feelings start to evolve:
- from uncertainty to opportunity;
- from dependency to independency;
- from fearfulness to self belief;
- from powerlessness to creativeness;
- from meaninglessness to purposefulness;
- from chaos to divine order; and
- from instability to groundedness.
Collective responsibility
Those of us who are life coaches have a collective responsibility to help people awaken to their true inner power and their ability to shape their own destiny and the world around them for the better.
Dyer\’s wisdom
The way to thrive in a world that seems – looking outwardly – to be in a royal mess, is to start by finding peace, harmony and purpose within.
Then it is simply a matter of following the late Dr Wayne Dyer’s advice:
“Change the way you look at things …
… and the things you look at will change!”
Hi Bill, thanks for another great article- one that is sobering and challenging, as it is evocative. I have been invited to reclaim the power of the coaching approach for my own life (which we easily give less attention to for ourselves in our ”work’ of coaching others). And how powerful indeed is the coaching modality for reconnecting us with our whole beings, and getting in touch with our dreams, purpose and best possible lives? Your article sparked my thoughts again about the times we live in…and I humbly offer the last stanza of this poem as a contribution:
What time is this…?
This is a time of deep felt fears,
This is a time of anguish, sadness and grief,
This is a time of frustration, impatience and anger,
This is a surreal time, where life and death kiss,
This is the pause and the unfolding mystery,
This is, right now, right here,
The awakening to something new,
This is the time of release and rebirth.

Hi Roger
Its such a pleasure to reconnect with you again on this platform. Thank you for this amazing contribution. I see the truth in what you write!
More than the years 2000 or 2012, which were preceded by elaborate catastrophizing predictions, 2020 has been the unexpected, real threshold year. Thresholds in values, in consciousness and thresholds in our beliefs. Intended or not, it cannot be denied that this year will be the trigger to many fundamental and lasting changes, including, as you so eloquently convey, the reappraisal of the need for inner resilience end trust. Thank you for maintaining and tactfully expressing the precarious balance between danger and opportunity.
Thanks for this valuable contribution, Arjan!
Thank you for the affirmation.
I was involve with the church compassionate ministry and during lockdown the church building was closed and nothing happened. I wrestled within because I wanted to be out there and continue to do the feeding and spreading the word of God.
I registered a NPC and today I’m running a soup kitchen, self funded and some sponsors.
I’m getting so many inspiring words for what I’m doing.
With Gods protection and COVID 19 awareness we continue to serve.
Hi Vinita,
It’s people like you that help bring the stability I have referred to. Thank you for the important work you do!
A superb overview of what has taken place globally and a clear description of the benefits felt by those who make a wise decision to embark on a journey within, supported, hopefully, by an accredited New Insights Life Coach. Thank you, Bill, for the supportive role that you play in the lives of those of us who are New Insights Life Coaches.
Thank you too, Karen, for your great work as a New Insights certified life coach!
