Changing Our World

Home » Changing Our World

By all accounts our beloved planet is in a real mess at the moment. And it’s all thanks to us.

Have you heard of the so-called ‘Doomsday Clock’?

It was designed as a symbol to represent the likelihood of a planet-wide man made catastrophe. Midnight on the clock denotes the onset of ‘doomsday’ and the more dangerous our world becomes the closer the hands get to that fateful time.

In 2018, we are just two minutes away from midnight – the closest we’ve been since the clock was conceived by atomic scientists in 1947.

Changing Our World (continued)

Environmental and political woes

On the environmental front, our climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable, species of plants and wildlife are joining the endangered list at an alarming rate, our oceans are awash with plastic debris and vast swathes of coral reefs that sustain marine life are under threat of destruction through bleaching.

On the political front things look equally bleak. We’ve seen a rise in populism, a trend of increasingly authoritarian and dictatorial leadership in the US, China and the emerging markets, a reversal of the trend towards denuclearisation of the world and a general uptick in corruption and public distrust in governments.

The root cause?

So what exactly is the root cause of all our troubles?

Perhaps it is the inexorable growth in the human population that is putting severe strain on global resources and causing rising irritability as we crowd ever closer together?

Or perhaps there has been a general breakdown in morality and societal values? Thanks to technology, the world has become more closely connected than ever before with the result that seemingly nothing is \’off limits\’ nowadays.

Or is it a failure of our education systems to think outside of the box when it comes to helping youngsters define what true success means to them? So many complete their education but remain clueless as to what their purpose in life might be.

Where are the positives?

If you’ve read this post up to now, you may well be wondering where the positive ‘insights’ have gone. After all, the last thing we all need in our lives is more depressing news, not so?

Well, sometimes it takes a reminder, a wake up call, or a conscious appreciation of the problem to kickstart our natural human ingenuity into finding and pursuing the solution.

Our own worst enemies

As fellow life coaches will know, people are inclined to be their own worst enemies until something or someone points that out to them and helps them come to terms with the fact that there is a different and more empowering way.

When the going gets tough and one’s back feels pinned firmly to the wall, the instinct of the ego (that part of us that seeks to promote and protect our identity at all costs) is to find something or someone to lay the blame on.

We humans love to deflect our problems – to make them someone else’s, rather than accept that they are of our own making and then set about using our abundant inner strengths to overcome them.

Sadly this trait is no more evident than in our political leaders when things don’t go their way. Leaders who accept full responsibility are a rare breed indeed.

Taking a long hard look in the mirror

So it is my judgement that to change our world for the better each of us need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask the difficult question:

“In what ways am I, and my behaviour, part of the collective problem faced by the human species?”

Not that difficult

Changing our world for the better is not only entirely possible, it is happening all around us and, surprisingly, it is not that difficult.

It requires each of us to resolve to spend less time blaming everyone and everything else around us and focus more time drawing on our unique talents and abilities in order to contribute to the solution.

Living one’s purpose

One of the best things each of us could possibly do is to commit to finding and living our personal purpose in life.

I believe we are all here to serve the ongoing growth and evolution of the species, the planet and, indeed, the entire universe. We have a collective responsibility but each of us has a somewhat different role to play, or a unique, individual, contributing purpose.

When we are driven by our unique purposes, rather than by blinkered materialism, self centred agendas or meeting impulsive needs, we work in harmony with the earth and not at cross purposes with it.

Actors on the stage of life

We are all actors in a vast play on the stage of life.

When we realise that we each have a small but vital role in ensuring that the play goes off without a hitch, life takes on real meaning and our participation becomes both joyful and fulfilling.

A tidal wave of change

I relish the life coaching industry.

It’s entire reason for being is to help people to find their unique purposes, align their values, overcome their limiting beliefs, develop their inner strengths and act in ways that will help unleash their talents and skills in service of a better world.

Changing our world for the better is not just a nice thing for some of us to do, it is an essential mission for all of us if we wish future generations to thrive and prosper.

Today, I’d like to pay tribute to all the wonderful life coaches out their who are selflessly committed to changing our world, one client at a time!

Through coaching, a tidal wave of change is slowly building.

Let’s ride it together!

  1. So much ‘Golden Dust’ has already been sprinkled on this blog post by other contributors, but I do wish to thank you Bill for another piece of inspiring writing.
Certainly we can all help change the World for the better. One step at a time. Tip toe if we must, so long as we continue to take the steps forward. Thank You!

  2. It is a great motivation and confirmation that we as life coaches are on the right path. Everybody has something to teach someone else and if we all just do our bit it will have the ripple effect. If we look at taking on the world it might seem overwhelming but we can take heart in the fact that even the movements of the wings of butterfly can have an impact on weather world wide. Lets all start with just trying to be one percent better each day, as James Clear, habit specialist put it, and it will add up to us being 37 times better (more of what we should be) at the end of a year. The repeat of small changes will charge the big wave of difference.

  3. Thanks for sharing such a powerful and pertinent post Bill, inspiring as always. Life coaching is such an important way for me of helping to make a difference in the world as you say, one client at a time. It is definitely a vocation in my view and if we can each help 10 people that starts to make a real swell of positive change in our world.

  4. Dear Bill

Thank you so much for your acknowledgment of the way in which a life coach can facilitate change in others and in the world. It is, in my view, the most fulfilling job of all. I really appreciate the way in which you share your knowledge, experience and insights with us.

  5. An excellent read as usual and in particular, very relevant as we all face a world that needs everyone to take responsibility. Only when we do this, can we make the change we want to see in our world. Thank you Bill for putting down into words thoughts that we all ponder on and wonder what we can do, as individuals, to create a better world for all.

  6. Christine Jeffery

I enjoy every single one of your blog posts, but this one is particularly powerful. Thank you Bill!

  7. Fantastic article Bill – thanks so much. 100% in line with my current goal and that is to make a change by starting with myself. Today, I choose to act with kindness!
