In early October last year I briefly broke with the tradition of written blog posts and offered you the opportunity to listen to a podcast of an interview I did with Paul Lowe.
Paul, who runs a not for profit enterprise called HEARTS (Helping Everyone Achieve Results Towards Success) is the brains behind a popular series of podcasts titled ‘Mastering the Game of Life’.
After our first interview on the topic of life purpose, Paul, who also happens to be a New Insights certified life coach, invited me to be part of a series of quarterly discussions, each of which would focus on one of the key topics that comprise the New Insights life coaching programme.
Our most recent discussion centred around human needs – and specifically the concept of ‘the six human needs’ as originally proposed by Anthony Robbins.
“Understanding human needs is half the job of meeting them.”
– Adlai Stevenson
Completely unscripted
Paul and I resolved upfront that all of our conversations would be completely unscripted and that we would just go where the discussion took us, while retaining a focus on the topic.
What you\’ll hear about
In this podcast you’ll hear about the following:
- We are all driven by six needs, irrespective of who we are and where we come from.
- There are four basic, fundamental needs that are paired together.
- There are two higher order needs that are more focused on self-actualisation.
- Each of the two pairs of basic needs are required to be met and in a state of balance before one can properly focus on satisfying the higher order needs.
- As our basic needs are fundamental we prioritise getting them met at all costs.
- Without conscious awareness of how we are driven by our needs, we humans are inclined to indulge in any kind of behaviour or action that will get our needs met and in balance, even if those behaviours are destructive in the longer term.
The topic of six human needs and the actions and behaviours we take to get our needs met will go a long way towards explaining why so many of us go off the rails or, at the very least, find life frustrating and unfulfilling.

Wow! 70minutes and 8seconds with the best ROI imaginable!
Congratulations to both you Bill and Paul for this hugely insightful podcast. Actually a bit emotional for me as parts of each of your individual stories resonate with parts of my own.
Thanks also for : “Chasing the ladder vs. Happiness” – “Charging of a mobile phone = connecting with higher powers” – “pieces of a jigsaw in a box = life?” 🙂 Simply a brilliant conversation between the two of you!
Thanks Bill, for the reminder of the connection between the 6 Human Needs and the 4 Classes of Human Experience/Behaviour.
I also connect Needs and Purpose by saying Happiness can come from WHAT we do when our needs are met in ways that are ‘healthy’ for us and Fulfillment may occur from WHY we do it – when we live our Life Purpose/use our special gifts. Thank you to you both again for this podcast.
As always – you are so very welcome Jan!
An interesting podcast, Bill. I particularly enjoyed the clarity that you both described during the conclusion.
Thank you Karen!
