It seems like just a few days ago that I was writing a brief review of 2016 and looking forward to a few weeks break. And now, here we are, well into a brand new year!
Well, they say time flies while you’re having fun! How true.
Welcome to another year and one in which I hope some of the dreams you have for yourself and your loved ones will be fulfilled.

This Year Make it Happen (continued)
Pinning our hopes on the new year
Isn’t it interesting how we pin so many hopes on a new year each time one comes around?
in reality of course, the start of a ‘new year’ is just an arbitrary point in a continuous cycle defined by the movement of our planet around the sun. In cosmic terms, every January 1st finds us back at the same point we started out at the beginning of the previous year, ready to embark on yet another cyclical journey around the sun.
An opportunity to start afresh
Fortunately, few of us equate the advent of a new year with the feeling of treading water or walking on a treadmill. Every time we clock up a new number to describe the cycle we’re in, it feels like we are somehow ‘cleaning the slate’ and being given the opportunity to start afresh.
Psychologically this is a good thing as it causes us to pause, reflect and re-energise, with a view to adopting a new, wiser, more positive and effective perspective on life and its challenges.
Well, that’s in theory anyway!
Good intentions … but
We all know how easy it is during the holiday period to visualise doing things differently in the New Year. We’ve all gone the route of proclaiming that things are going to change and then voicing our resolutions to the world only to find that, when we get back to our normal routines, that change is much harder to come by, or sustain, than we imagined.
There are a two key reasons for this.
Firstly, the desire for change and the visualisation of the changed state happen in what is typically a holiday period. Our minds are more open and fresh as we step away from the day-to-day issues that bog us down. Unfortunately, the actual change has to take place only once we get back into ‘business as usual’ mode when our minds are preoccupied and our limiting beliefs, prejudices, cynical/sceptical attitudes are back in full force!
Secondly, most resolutions are typically somewhat whimsical fantasies, lacking in the necessary substance and specifics required to make them serious contenders for prioritisation in our ‘business as usual’ lives.
Investing for change
Life coaches know this only too well and what to do about it. That’s why the smart people out there invest in getting a coach to help them ensure they implement the changes they envisage.
New Insights coaches are taught to help their clients turn typical new year resolutions or ‘heady holiday hopes and desires’ into powerful goals that have real integrity, meaning and substance while remaining truly emotive and inspiring to the client.
To bring about change in your personal life may seem simple enough on the face of it, but every year millions proclaim their desire to do so in some way or other only to fail miserably.
Sabotage busting techniques
Life coaches bring tried and trusted tools and techniques into play to deal effectively with the many and varied psychological barriers and hurdles that people subconsciously construct to sabotage their attempts to change (even when that’s what they need and want in their hearts).
Change does not come from flipping a switch – and it is never linear. It is a process and, like the passage of our earth around the sun, it is cyclical. Only once you begin the change process the personal growth that you experience ensures that you never return to ’square one’ even though it may feel like that from time to time.
The upward spiral of change
New Insights coaches are taught to help their clients envision the change cycle as an upward spiral. There is always growth and you are always ‘higher up the spiral’ than when you started out on the journey. In this way clients are able to manage the plateau periods that inevitably accompany change and which make most ordinary people want to throw in the towel.
How about you?
How about you? What is it that you have set out to accomplish this year?
If it is that important to you – and it should be – then take my advice and invest in a coach to help you make it happen.
Better still, why not go a few steps further and invest in becoming a life coach yourself. Not only will you learn how to make things happen in your own life but you will create a great career from helping others to make their dreams come true.
What could be better than that?

This year my desire is two-fold…to become a Mum, and a Life Coach.
I kind of see how the two correspond as both require a level of responsibility that only comes with time and experience.
To be able to make the two align would be the ultimate dream.
I am determined, ready, willing and able to make 2017 happen. It is happening and I am so grateful.
Thanks Bill, I am truly grateful to be part of the New Insight Life Coaches. The best gift and investment ever.
God bless!
Good for you Neo – go for it!
I cannot imagine anything better than being a life coach, Bill. Thank you for inspiring me to think deeply about my strategy for 2017, and for encouraging me to ask probing questions as the New Year unfolds. As a result of the dedication of my coach and mentor, I have felt the deep benefits of the new habits I established, and a new way of being that I created six years ago. Armed with a growing awareness, and paying close attention to my behavior each day, enables me to continue to learn and grow. A coach’s effectiveness is enhanced by a lifelong commitment to learning and growing.
That’s a wonderful comment – thanks Karen – and have a truly great 2017!
