Why Life Coaching Works

Home » Why Life Coaching Works

My late mother-in-law possessed a very special talent.

Quiet, gentle, unassuming lady that she was, she knew just how to engage people in a way that would make them feel comfortable and willing to reveal more of themselves.

I’m not easily given to talking about myself at a deep and detailed level, yet, after conversations with Mary, I often found myself reflecting on the fact that she probably knew more about me than most.

She had a way of making me believe she had a special interest in me. And yet, I knew I was not unique in this regard as most of her friends and family felt the same way.

So what exactly is it that Mary did and how does that relate to life coaching?

Generous listening

Well, she practised what we, at New Insights, like to call ‘generous listening’. (A more commonly used term is ‘active listening’ but I’ve never particularly resonated with that. After all, listening is, by definition, a passive activity).

‘Generous’ listeners are those who pay homage to the fact that we are endowed with two ears but only one mouth.

They are generous in the ‘air time’ that they provide those that they talk with. They are generous in the degree of authentic interest they show in those who they choose to strike up conversations with. And they are generous with the respect that they afford to others and their views.

Questioning

Mary’s ability to demonstrate a real interest in another, derived from her astute use of questioning.

She had a knack of asking non intrusive, yet probing questions; questions that felt comfortable and compelling to answer, such that you would happily volunteer more information than you might normally be inclined to.

And while you were progressively ‘pouring your heart out’, she would smile, nod politely, with the occasional facial expressions and other body language that conveyed, “you are special”.

Mary, I think unknowingly, had the makings of a great life coach!

Getting people to open up

Life coaching works because it is effective at getting people to open up about themselves.

When people feel safe and comfortable to talk freely about their lives – what they love, dislike, believe, value and aspire to – they can start the process of connecting with their inner beings, appreciating their true inner power and then exercising it, often to amazingly positive effect.

Resist … or embrace change?

Most of us, although perfectly capable of achieving amazing things, don’t.

Instead of embracing change by imagining the opportunity it can bring, we resist change by imagining our worst fears coming true.

This is the ego at work, fiercely protecting one’s established identity by resisting any change to the status quo that might threaten what it has built up.

I won’t expand on what I mean by that here but it is safe to say that we humans are naturally resistant to change.

That’s why most people, when left to their own devices, struggle to step over the boundary that separates their comfort zone from something altogether more incredible.

Life coach required

Imagine being tethered to your comfort zone by self imposed chains that you seemingly have no way to break.

Then imagine meeting someone who hands you a pair of heavy duty, titanium tipped bolt cutters that give you the power to slice through those chains with ease.

That someone is a life coach.

Helping you to be, do and have

The life coach is trained, equipped and committed to exercising a laser-like focus on helping you be, do and have what it is you want from life.

The engagement starts with getting to know you and, in the process, helping you get to know yourself. Safe, comfortable and meaningful conversations help encourage you to look within for clarity on who you really are and what you really want from life.

The life coach then employs simple, yet incredibly powerful tools and techniques to help you expose and eradicate limiting beliefs, uncover your authentic values and show you how to engage your inner power and creative spirit to make things you thought were impossible, possible.

A big step further

New Insights trained life coaches take things a big step further. They are specifically trained in transformational coaching that ultimately leads to finding – and following – your purpose in life.

What could be more powerful and more fulfilling than that?

Life coaching works

Life coaching (conducted by professionally trained, ethical life coaches) really works.

If you are still sceptical, don’t take my word for it. Just give it a try and make up your own mind.
