Thought, intention, meditation and quantum physics

Home » Thought, intention, meditation and quantum physics

Although my passion lies in inspiring people through my writings and the work of the life coach training companies I own and run, my early training was in the field of civil engineering.

Many might argue that the engineering and human motivation disciplines are largely incompatible or, at least, poor ‘bedfellows’.

The former is rooted in science and an application of the laws of physics. The latter is founded on what some would argue are altogether more esoteric, philosophical and unscientific principles.

Why, then, would someone trained in engineering be drawn to the field of human motivation?

A closer connection than we realise

In my case, the reason is my fervent belief in the fact that science and the mysterious workings of the mind are far more closely connected than may at first be obvious.

Giants in their fields

As a case in point I refer you to the meeting of two giants in their respective fields of science and philosophy: David Bohm, famous quantum theorist, and Jiddu Krishnamurti, prolific writer, philosopher and speaker.

Krishnamurti had no formal education at all in the sciences, yet, according to Bohm, he demonstrated a profound understanding of various concepts related to quantum mechanics.

On the occasions that Bohm and Krishnamurti met, they would engage in probing deeply into topics such as the nature of time, space and the mind, inevitably converging on the subject of consciousness.

General disorder and confusion

Bohm felt that Krishnamurti’s most powerful teachings were those concerned with the general disorder and confusion that pervades the consciousness of mankind. This is what Krishnamurti believed was the root cause of widespread sorrow, misery and lack of love in our world.

According to Krishnamurti, this disorder stems from general human ignorance of the nature of our own thought processes. While we are mostly aware of the content of our thoughts, we are hopelessly ignorant when it comes to the origin and process of our thinking.

Outwardly, this ignorance manifests as the disorder and upheaval we see so clearly within society itself.

But how?

Quantum physics and conscious intent

This is where we turn to Bohm’s area of expertise, quantum physics, and the research of renowned Stanford University physicist, William Tiller.

At the quantum level it has been shown that the mere act of observing an experiment will effect the outcome. The profound implication is that human consciousness can bring to bear changes in sub atomic particles and thus the objects that they comprise.

In his extensive research, Tiller discovered that it is possible to effect a significant change in the properties of physical materials simply by holding a clear intention to do so.

Bending reality to one’s will

In other words, a conscious observer may ‘bend reality to their will’ by holding a focused intent. If that intent is held by multiple people at the same time, the effect is amplified.

Once this phenomenon is understood as being real, it is not hard to see how and why disorder within can result in disorder without.

Let\’s switch back to our philosopher friend …

The solution to our problems

The answer to the problems of mankind as suggested by Krishnamurti, therefore lies in our awareness of the process of thought.

According to Krishnamurti, such awareness requires meditation. By his own definition, this simply means to ponder and reflect while focusing one’s attention on what is actually going on.

Unleashing a creative force

Krishnamurti maintained that the act of meditation itself, is enough to bring order to the activity of thought. In this state, the mind becomes quiet, energy increases and a powerfully creative force is unleashed.

This, according to Krishnamurti, is extraordinarily significant to the whole of life.

The connection with life coaching

Precisely!

Those of us who operate in the field of life coaching have always promoted the concept of one’s ability to create one’s own reality.

At New Insights, our training is based on a proprietary model or framework, the first building block of which is intention!
