A New Way to Look at Life

One of the topics we cover in the New Insights Life Coach Training Programme is The Beauty of Balance.

I found myself revisiting that subject today after reflecting on the fact that my own personal life has been feeling unusually up and down of late.

I’m fortunate that I am normally a deep sleeper. But the last few nights have been different.

Lying awake in the early hours

I lay awake in the early hours of this morning wondering if my own experience was just a tiny reflection of a world that, in many respects, is showing disconcerting signs of growing instability.

The COVID pandemic caused unprecedented turmoil. The fallout from that is still affecting the lives of many ordinary people, if not in their physical health, then in their mental and/or financial well-being.

Layering in angst

The latest developments in the Middle East simply serve to layer angst and uncertainty on top of the many troubles we have been confronting of late.

Here, I’m thinking about natural disasters of seemingly growing intensity, the devastating Ukraine war, heightened tensions in the Far East and abnormal unpredictability in the politics of the world’s most powerful nation.

Coffee clears my thinking

I lay in bed reflecting on all of the ‘chaos’ around us, and the huge levels of personal anxiety this induces in many who feel powerless in the face of it.

“This can’t be right,” I thought, as I decided to seek solace in a cup of my favourite beverage.

Back in bed with caffeine-induced clarity of thought, I reminded myself of the key principle on which life coaching is based.

We have the power

We have the power and ability to create the lives we desire.

We just need to switch focus away from the chaotic and unforgiving external world and inward, towards the amazing, all-knowing, inner being that we each possess.

According to the mainstream news, it would seem that we are all headed for ‘hell in a handbasket’ and there’s precious little we can do about it, other than accept our fate and live life as best we can.

Perhaps there are powerful vested interests that stand to benefit from ordinary people falling for and adopting this chaos-induced, ‘coping’ approach to life and its negativity?

Mmm … That’s the stuff of a separate article!

A different perspective

Anyway, as with anything in life, there is a different perspective to be had on this.

Fortunately, there is a new way to look at life.

The subatomic world of waves

As a bit of an aside, we’ve traditionally been taught that we – and all matter – are made up of molecules, which, in turn, are comprised of atoms.

Relatively recent scientific research has shown that it doesn’t stop there. Atoms are made up of subatomic particles including electrons, quarks and the evasive ‘Higgs boson’, sometimes called the ‘God particle’.

When you delve into the fascinating subatomic world, particles curiously start to behave like energy waves. Scientists talk about wave-particle duality, meaning that every elementary particle exhibits the properties of, not only particles, but also energy waves!

Let’s put the little ‘scientific aside’ aside for a moment. 🙂

Here’s the point I am making:

One big vibrational system

Life is one big vibrational system; a system in which positive and negative coexist.

The positive cannot exist without the corresponding negative, as the overall system must remain in perfect balance.

With negative there is always positive. With dark there is always light.

Sublime balance

And at the core of this great vibrational dance between positivity and negativity, exists a state of sublime balance.

Relate this to your personal experience of life and you may appreciate that this derives from both ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ situations and events. You cannot have one without the other.

Our emotions are our responses to our circumstances and experiences. And these too are both positive and negative.

Just as life cannot be made up solely of positive experiences, we cannot have only positive emotions. (If we did, how would we know that they were positive?)

So, the challenge comes in redefining what we understand or perceive by the terms ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ when we refer to the various experiences in our lives.

Instead of labelling everything as either good (we enjoy the experience) or bad (we don’t enjoy the experience) we need to view both types of experience as opposite yet complementary.

In other words, pleasurable experiences and growth cannot come about without challenging experiences that may be relatively ‘painful’ in nature.

Mental embrace

By mentally embracing the fact that both polarities must coexist, we can channel our creativity into seeking out and experiencing the beautiful state of perfect balance that exists at the heart of this bipolar system.

Life, when we are able to perceive of and experience it as a harmonious balance between positive and negative, is truly special.

That state of balance is pure, unconditional LOVE.

  1. My famous teacher and author Dr John Demartini hardly talk about anything without mentioning the importance of being aware that life is like a magnet. It has both the positive and negative ends. You can try to cut it as many times as you want you will still get the same result and so is life. He also emphasizes that growth happens at the centre of support and challenge. This is how the universe is structured. It is meant to present life with both opposites at the same time and the sooner we realise and accept this non-negotiable state of affairs the quicker we can experience what he calls the state of unconditional love (SOUL).

      1. Another inspiring blog. I recently likened ‘unconditional love’ to the concept of ‘String theory’ with a practice client. The look of ‘eurika’ on their face made me chuckle !

Hi Bill, I see all of this from the perspective of God’s word. I am not a doomsday person, we are told in the word, there will be floods, wars rumours of wars, I believe God’s word is the ultimate truth. The end times started when Jesus was born, and all through history people believed the end times are just around the corner. Only God Knows. I acknowledge all these things are happening, and do what I have to do every day. I believe God does not leave or forsake his children, The secret is like you say love, every day, if you can make a difference in your immediate surrounds, pray for the victims of wars etc, and the less fortunate, you do not have time to focus on your self. All we have is a gift from God, New Insights has given us the tools to develope ourselves and others, focus on that and the things of the world will go strangely dim ( part of a song) Be blessed.

  2. Good morning Bill

I feel you. I go through the same waves thinking about the world, its state and especially the people in it, which can sometimes leaves me in a worrying state and almost powerless, but then coming into the present, I ask myself what can I do in my personal capacity to change things. Recently becoming a life coach gives me peace of mind, the confidence and ability to change things even if its one person at a time – Deep down I’m very optimistic and hopeful for a big ripple effect. And yes, what we attach to a situation makes us feel a certain way, but we have power of choice, and if we apply ourselves and change our perspective, we will be able to see the positive in negative and find our balance. The power is ours.

    Thanks again Bill for sharing.

  3. Hi Bill

Thanks for always laying out your ideas so eloquently. I don’t always get to reading the blog but when I do, I am always left with a Truth reminder or confirmation. In this case you confirm what in the East is referred to as the Tao…the balance between periods of yin and yang polarities. Finding the center point Within
btings this internal stillness behind the external chaos. I find the esoteric wisdom around bioenergy/prana/qi to be a very practical way to instill this Higher Consciousness behind both positive and negative vibrations. The work of Dr Hawkins touches on this beautifully in his emotional guidance system. Also the work of Dr Sue Morter on Energy codes is a great practical aid! I have found this combination of the the eastern and western science around bioenergy to be a practical way to calm the central nervous system, activate the parasympathetic CNS and tunjng into a space of Higher guidance, Clarity and wisdom that guides us from one moment to the next. Thanks for keeping us inspired.

  4. How liberating it truly is, Bill, as you describe, to shift our focus. One of the wisest decisions we could ever make, is to engage in yoga, which means unity. Another is to disconnect from mainstream media. Observe how easily it becomes, to tune into inner peace. The key to creating balance in our lives, lies in daily breathing and meditation practices, stopping at least once a day to disconnect from our electronic devices and living more fully in the present moment. Letting go of the regrets of the past and our concerns about the future, sets us free to enjoy the present moment. When we make these conscious decisions, we feel the benefits immediately. How grateful I am for this program, and my coach, from whom I learnt how to see things differently and how to do things differently.

    Hi Bill
Thanks so much for this insightful topic. I’ve been quite disturbed with recent and ongoing aggression across the world resulting in feeling unbalanced. Your article is a great reminder of balance which is often overlooked or forgotten.

Hi Bill, I think I am feeling the same way you are and always telling myself that the dark comes before the light. It’s refreshing to know that others feel the same way and to look at it from a global perspective. Thank you for the insight.’
