Does change (or lack of it) leave you feeling anxious or inspired?
One of the things that makes life coaching so effective, is the techniques that coaches use to uncover what it is that inspires their clients and to plant seeds in that fertile ground for positive improvement.
I use the word ‘uncover’ because, for so many of us nowadays, that which truly inspires us lies forgotten, buried beneath layers of stress, frustration, anxiety and the general pressures of modern day living.

The fountain of creativity
And yet inspiration is the well from which the fountain of creativity gushes. And creativity – taking positive, constructive action – is the antidote to the debilitating effects of living in the 21st century.
My first experience of life coaching happened at a time when I was preparing for major changes in a number of areas of my life – leaving a sound career in corporate employment, changing countries, moving house, setting up my own business and moving my children into new schools.
Dark caverns
My life coach spent sometime getting to understand my situation and how I felt. I shared my heightened feelings of anxiety, stress and even resentment at that time, wondering exactly how someone not closely connected to me could possibly relate.
I explained how I felt while trying to disguise my true emotions but secretly, I found my mind probing some dark caverns:
“Imagine all the things that could go wrong,” I thought to myself. “What would happen if things did go wrong?” “What would I do?” “Who would I turn to?” “What would become of me and my family…?”
A different tack
After listening carefully and asking a few questions my life coach took what I then thought was a surprising tack.
“What a fabulous opportunity you have and how privileged I feel to walk with you on this journey. I feel so inspired,” she said, before launching the question that would totally break my increasingly negative state:
“So please share with me – in detail – what it is that truly inspires you?”
I felt a bit silly at first. Here was I describing a situation that for me was worrying, to say the least. My coach, on the other hand, could see an entirely different perspective.
Forced to reflect
The question forced me to reflect on the many times when I had felt positive, energized, passionate about life and determined to make a difference.
A broad smile broke out across my face as I realised just how easily she had taken charge of the tone of the session.
“I really feel inspired whenever I get the opportunity to inspire and empower others,” I offered.
“Oh, that’s fantastic. Now, let\’s consider how all these changes that you are about to make will contribute to your ability to inspire others,” she replied.
I took a deep breath. As my focus began to shift to the things that lifted my spirits, I felt a sense of relief and a feeling of deep relaxation come over me.
A \’bring it on\’ attitude to change
It took less than five sessions with my coach for my initial state of anxiety to completely give way to one of excitement, enthusiasm and a \’bring it on\’ attitude to the changes that were about to unfold in my life.
How about you?
How inspired do you feel by your day to day life?
If you\’re living an inspired life, doing what you love, being excited about each new day – then I\’m delighted for you. That\’s how life is meant to be!
Going through the motions?
On the other hand, if, like so many people, you\’re going through the motions, rationalising that …
“There\’s no other choice\”, \”I have to do this for my family\”, “Life was never meant to be easy\” or “One day I\’ll win the lottery and things will change\” …
… then take it from me that you have simply lost sight of – and connection with – what it is that truly inspires you.
Good news
The good news is that reconnecting with your inspiration (and we all have it within us) is not that difficult to do. All it takes is:
– Something to break your state
– A little deep reflection
– Some positive action on your part
The \’something that broke my state\’ was life coaching.
After a little deep reflection it dawned on me that the very thing that had ‘broken my state’ was also a potential source of ongoing inspiration.
Buoyed by a vision of connecting with my inspiration, I committed to a plan of positive action.
Having originally signed up for life coaching sessions with a fair degree of scepticism, I now find myself owning companies dedicated to training great life coaches who can bring freedom, confidence and growth to people from all walks of life.
That’s truly inspiring for me.
If you feel the need, please give my simple three-step plan a try.
My wish is that whenever the going in your life gets tough, or seems like it is getting tough, you can put this plan into action and reconnect with that which inspires you.
My wish is that you live your inspiration!

Thanks Bill, it is so easy to be caught in the rat race. It is quite funny because I have just finished the book Who moved my cheese for I do not know how many times i have read it. The previous one had spelling mistakes.
Great book – one of my favourites (and a very quick read!)
hmmmm …….. so uncanny that I find myself in the same place you did Bill – the fear , the uncertainty , the anxiety …. I’ve made the career change decision, moved to a different city in a different province ( that’s almost as good as being in a different country ) , usually one to rise to a challenge , I now find myself staring into those “dark caverns ” you mention . Miss Independent over the past couple of years ( and not really one to ask for help in the past ) , it is now dawning on me that I need a coach too !!
Well you know where to look, Tracy 🙂

Good luck!
What a truly inspiring and motivating account of the role that life coaching played, to get you where you are now, Bill.
Many thanks Karen. I’m so glad you found it inspiring given that is the topic of the post 🙂
Knowing what inspires me is a great start although not always easy to find a way to deliver that inspiration.
I am inspired by seeings others succeed and enjoy their life. Teaching, training and coaching is a great way realise my passion and will continue to look for ways to deliver this.
Bill, thanks again for a great blog and my weekly inspiration.
That’s a noble source of inspiration Geoff – I wish you massive success!
