It’s nearly ten years ago since I wrote a blog post titled The Winds of Change.
Today, as I look back at that post, I can fully appreciate the saying: “The only constant in life is change.” Winds of change continue to blow relentlessly but, like hurricanes fanned by a changing climate, they are becoming more violent.
Nonetheless, these winds are also ushering in a time of unprecedented change for the good, a time of Great Awakening!
Overpopulation
Ten years ago – it feels like yesterday – I wrote that the population of our planet, hovering around 6.9bn, was poised to reach a milestone 7bn. Since then, our numbers have swelled by another billion! That’s a 15% increase in what is effectively just the blink of an eye in Earth’s history!
Burgeoning debt
I wrote that the US national debt had reached unprecedented levels, at $15tn (that’s trillion if you weren’t sure!) Today that figure stands at $27tn, a massive 80% increase. How can any ordinary human being like you or me get their heads around such a staggering number?
A climate crisis
I shared some statistics about our warming climate. CO2 (carbon dioxide – the ‘greenhouse gas’) levels reached an all time high of 392 ppm (parts per million) in 2011. That level has climbed to 418ppm today. The increase may seem modest at 6.6% but it has to be put in context. Levels of CO2 remained almost unchanged at around 280ppm in the 10,000 years prior to 1950.
In the past ten years our planet has lost over 160 plant and animal species. Deforestation of the planet’s lungs, our tropical forests, has continued apace at some 12m hectares, or 30m acres, per year.
The politics of confrontation
We are also witnessing rising instability on the geopolitical front.
New superpower, China, is increasingly flexing its muscle in the South China Sea and ratcheting up hostility towards Taiwan, while the powerful US navy looks to stare it down. Russia has committed to huge military build ups on the Ukranian border and in the Arctic. Iran and Israel trade threats and insults relating to the former’s nuclear ambitions. Renegade nation, North Korea, is looking increasingly unpredictable and hostile as its nuclear arsenal balloons in size and scope.
A biological assault
No reflection on the past decade is complete without reference to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The disease has taken many lives but, without diminishing this fact, many, many more have been wrecked by the fear, uncertainty and authoritarian lockdowns and overreactions that we are all too aware of. Talk of the introduction of mandatory vaccine passports, comforting for some, seems positively Orwellian to others.
Inspiration in scary times
If you’re still with me, you’ll be forgiven for feeling somewhat depressed by all of this. On the face of it, it seems we are living in very scary times indeed.
But, as you know, the underlying theme of these blogs is to inspire you.
The inspiration in this post derives from the knowledge that we humans are resourceful, resilient and adaptable. History has shown that difficult times bring out the best in us. And I firmly believe that the instability that we are currently experiencing is the trigger for a Great Awakening of humankind.
Expanded awareness and consciousness
We are moving into an era of expanded awareness and consciousness, where people are beginning to question everything about life on Earth. Why have we allowed the mess that I have described to come about? Why do so many of us seem shut off from the natural abundance that is our birthright? Why do so few have so much and so many have so little?
Liberating ourselves from the trap
Greedy powers that seek to control us by breeding fear, stifling our right to freedom of thought and speech and encouraging subservience are in for a rude awakening of their own. People all over are slowly coming to terms with their own inner power and ability to create new, more exciting, more prosperous realities.
As people grow in self awareness, they become acutely aware of the trap that we humans have fallen into – placing blind faith in others, institutions and governments to solve our problems and provide for our needs, instead of searching within for the answers.
Life coaching at the forefront
I believe that life coaching is a tool that is at the forefront of humanity’s Great Awakening. That may sound a little melodramatic but I really believe it.
Life coaching is solution – not problem – based. It encourages asking of the question: “What is possible here?” rather than “Why is this happening (to me)?” It helps us to harness and trust our inner beings and intuitions. It leads us to our purpose and sets us on a path to fulfilment and happiness. It teaches us personal responsibility. It liberates us from a dependency on others and the need to control others.
A key role to play
Those of us who are life coaches have a key role to play in helping accelerate the Great Awakening so that we can ensure that our children move towards a future in which fear, distrust and lack give way to personal freedom, self confidence, growth and abundance.

Difficult times bring the best in us – so true
This website is giving amazing information. Very informative and motivational blog.
Thanks Mehwish!
Very true and inspiration that we human we are very creative, resilient and adaptable but lack of personal awareness masses can’t see that the solutions to problem they are facing is within themselves, not out there thanks to new insight am now a captain of my own ship.
“Captain of my own ship” … I love this!
Thank you Bill, your words resonate strongly with me and I share your vision with regards to Life Coaching being a powerful tool in the new world that we are currently phasing into. Humanitarian projects, in my view, where people serve their fellow humans from a place of love and passion, without greed and control will be what the new earth will evolve around.
Indeed Yolande. Let’s work to bring that about!
A superbly written appraisal of the state of the world, Bill in which its vulnerability is emphasized by the comparative statistics from your previous blog. What would it take for the benefits of life coaching to be exponentially spread, so that every household in the world became aware of its potential to transform the world’s population and its way of being and its way of doing?
Thank you Karen. There is no question that we humans have the capacity for a massive step change in approach.
Witness the billions poured into creating a vaccination for COVID; billions that pour into the coffers of a very, very few and offer the general masses only short term protection (and who knows what in the long-term)
Just imagine if the same quantum of funds were chanelled into life coaching programmes and the gargantuan benefits that the general population would enjoy in the longer-term. Mental health would improve in leaps and bounds and with that the knowledge to naturally boost the immune systems such that vaccines and a swathe of other symptom-treating medicines are no longer necessary.
Methinks the world needs some serious out-of-the-box thinking! And methinks it is coming … not a moment too soon 🙂 🙂
Beautiful and true. Thank you for this.
You’re welcome!
