Not long ago I issued a certificate to a trainee life coach who had used up all but one week of the 24 months available to her to complete our course.
\”At least she made it,\” I thought, speculating that she was one of many of us who specialise in leaving important things to the very last minute.
But a few weeks later when her course feedback came in, I found myself riveted by her story of a life that took some quite amazing twists and turns shortly after she first registered with us.
After reading her account of being struck by adversity on multiple occasions and how this had just served to reinforce her determination to become a great life coach I was left bursting with admiration.
[box type=\”shadow\”]“All the adversity I\’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realise it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”

Life, as we all know, can be unpredictable. Things happen around us and to us all the time. But the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.
For me the following short story sums this up beautifully:
Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable. It felt like she was beset by one problem after another. She had grown tired of fighting and struggling all the time. “Stop the world, I want to get off” she remonstrated.
Her father, a chef, beckoned for her to follow him to the kitchen. There he filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.
Once the water in the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third.
He then let the pots sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter groaned and waited impatiently, wondering what on earth he was doing.
After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He scooped the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and poured it into a mug.
Turning to his daughter he asked. “My darling child, what do you see?”
“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she replied with a touch of sarcasm.
“Now I want you to mash the potatoes, peel the eggs and smell the coffee,”
As much to humour him as anything else, she did as he requested.
She had to admit, the potatoes were soft and fluffy and the eggs were well and truly hard boiled. The coffee had taken on a gorgeous rich aroma. She couldn’t help take a sip and that brought a smile to her face.
“Dad, what is this all about?” she asked.
Her father explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each had to face the same adversity in the form of the boiling water. However, each had reacted differently.
“The potato started off strong, hard, and unrelenting but in boiling water, it soon became soft and weak.\”
\”The egg started out as fragile, with a thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior. Once exposed to the boiling water the inside became hard.\”
\”The ground coffee beans, on the other hand, are unique. Once placed in the boiling water, they converted the water into a deliciously fragrant and tasty drink.”
He smiled and looked at his daughter. “Now, which are you,” he asked.
When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?
Woow great one, thanks Bill.
A potential of a thing is inside of a thing. Inside a seed, there is a tree.
1. The seed needs to be PLANTED in a GOOD soil and environment.
2. It requires both rainy and sunny season to grow strong and produce multiple fruits.
Similarly with human beings, we require all seasons to be able to grow stronger and produce multiple fruits. When we face challenges in life, we should always have the right / positive attitude towards them. When we go through the boiling, we need to perservere so that we may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
I am indeed grateful for ALL the challenges I have been through, I am strong and continues to grow stronger by day, I am able to make a positive difference in the world :).
Thank you :)…..
Hi
During times of adversity and challenge I always remind myself that diamonds are not formed without pressure ….. this helps me persevere and remain positive . I know from personal experience that times of greatest challenge are often times of greatest growth .
Thank you for thought-provoking and encouraging blog posts Bill .
Hi Bill I would like to comment first of all, on your opening paragraph. It contains a very important lesson for all of us: do not make assumptions. What a powerful story that follows, to illustrate the importance of working hard at cultivating a positive attitude and a virtuous response to the challenges that life sends us on a daily basis.
Thanks for highlighting this Karen. It’s an important reminder to us all!
Lovely message Bill! I think that we have all maybe been a potato, egg or the coffee at different stages in our lives. My choice is to always try to be a coffee as it is an alchemist- it changes something (maybe dark) to produce another more wonderful product (maybe gold)!!
Black gold … I love it!
Nice story for me, I am a coffee bean Bill. The tougher the adversity, the better I will come out, very tolerant when things are not working out, I know they will, its just a matter of the right which is there ahead waiting, sometime I feel I need the humbling to be able to handle the great things when they come.
Thank you am encouraged even more,
Regards,
Jeph
Thanks Jeph!
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it is difficult not to become the potato or the egg (or even both together).
That is when you have to dig deep and keep going, change what you are doing but keep focused on the goal.
Feeling a bit like a potato myself at the moment but the coffee is brewing.
Thanks for the inspiration Bill.
Ha ha, nice one Geoff. I can smell the aroma from here 🙂
I relate to the story very well and I am the egg. Inside I am hard and learnt to be strong. This makes me see life with reality life and accept that at some point or another an adversity will occur but I need to be strong inside.
🙂
Hi Bill
Can completely relate to this myself. I have been through much adversity to change my life around. When people tell me something can’t be done that just makes me more determined to do it. Its very useful with coaching clients too. Having been there I know there is a way out so there is no pulling the wool over my eyes when they give into procrastination.
We call it having ‘The Edge’. Being compassionate yet unwilling to tolerate medocrity 🙂
Thanks Annette.
Delightful analogy – I am the coffee bean!
Mocha Java or Robusta??
Haha I absolutely love this story and analogy behind it! It made me laugh in the end but brings a serious note that we have to take in life whatever we are handed and turn it round to prosper – when life gives you lemons….
I thought someone would relate the lemonade analogy. Thanks Natalie!
Wow, story of my life Bill . thank you.
I could be anyone of those but I beleive coffee bean captures my life the most.
Thaak you, for encouragement and inspiration.
