Escape the Mediocrity Trap

Home » Escape the Mediocrity Trap

As we slowly begin to emerge from the doom and gloom that descended upon us as the global pandemic struck, with its many nasty consequences, many of us are left thinking “What now?”

In today’s hectic world, an opportunity to think and reflect can often be ‘just what the doctor ordered’, so to speak.

It allows us time to breathe, collect our thoughts and – for those braver souls – time to contemplate setting out on a new and more exciting path!

A curse and a blessing

I’ve had some interesting discussions of late with people who have described how they experienced COVID-19, at first as a real curse … only to find that in some respects it has turned out to be a blessing (albeit in heavy disguise).

The loss of a job, the downturn in a business or severe restrictions on what we knew to be ‘normal life’ have all taken their toll. And yet, the disruption to our daily routines has forced many of us to awaken to just how mundane and mediocre our lives may have been.

I use the term mediocre here not as a form of external judgement but rather as one’s personal assessment of the extent to which one feels one is living life to the full.

The mediocrity trap

So many of us have become prey to what I call the ‘mediocrity trap’, caught up in circumstances and work that is personally unfulfilling and uninspiring. In our hearts we feel the need for more but, in our heads, we believe we are powerless to lift our gumboots out of the treacle we find ourselves mired in.

When you invest a substantial part of your life and energy in a pursuit that serves to put bread on the table – even though it fails miserably to ignite your passion and excitement – it is often difficult to comprehend a practical alternative.

Mediocrity breeds more mediocrity in a vicious cycle.

The less fulfilled we feel, the more fertile ground we provide for our limiting beliefs to grow. The less inspired we feel, the more we tend to procrastinate on taking the actions required to bring about the change that’s needed.

What I am describing is a common affliction.

Good news

But the great news is that it is easily and effectively addressed … by life coaching!

One of the fundamental principles on which New Insights life coaching is based is that we are all perfectly equipped to create the reality we desire. We are manifestly capable of rising above mediocrity, pursuing our dreams and living the lives we love!

All the raw material needed

Each and every one of us has all the \’raw material\’ we require to seek out and live fulfilling, exciting and joyful lives. We have been endowed with the precious gift of free will, extraordinary powers of visualisation and creation and a finely tuned emotional guidance system.

Unfortunately, instead of teaching us to look within, life conditions us to look externally for answers, solutions, recognition and validation. In doing so we become disconnected from our inner beings and sceptical of our own true inner power and ability.

Life coaching acts to reconnect us with our amazing inner beings.

Through developing our self awareness, we can become consciously aware of the mediocrity trap, remove our obstructive limiting beliefs, bring our values to the fore and harness the power we have to create a very different reality.

One’s past and present do not define one’s future

With the help of a great life coach you get to appreciate that the circumstances in which you find yourself, and how you got there, are just that. In no way do they have to define where it is you are going or what you will do in future.

By helping you to understand how where you are is merely where you are – and not where you have to remain.

Personal transformation

Most New Insights certified life coaches are experts in transformational coaching and can offer you a powerful programme of coaching that will take you from where you are, to where you want to be, within a mere six to eight months.

Most offer a free first session to remove any risk you may associate with trying out their services.

You have everything to gain … and just a tiny bit of your time to ‘lose’.

It’s time to escape the mediocrity trap!

  4. Hi Bill,

    Wise words!

I was confused and puzzled sitting home also, but I decided to find a way to escape “the mediocrity trap”. I learned that the only way for me is the way forward.

Time is ticking and there is a lot to do. Inactivity affects our future and if we don’t want to be mediocre, we have to act now.

    Thanks for it.

  5. Another excellent read. My clients have proved to me, over and over again, that the New Insights programme is empowering and certainly lifts people out of their mediocrity trap. On a more personal level, this COVID-19 pandemic has taught me so much about myself and the meaning of life. While challenging at times, it gave me the much-needed time for self-reflection.
